Allyson
An inspiring story of perseverance, personal growth, and success through Access to Achievement
Background: Discovering Access to Achievement
Allyson grew up and went to school in Maryland. After high school, she enrolled in community college, where she explored various courses, including pottery. A friend then invited her mom and her to visit the Outer Banks, where she fell in love with the charming town of Manteo. After years of vacationing on the Outer Banks, she and her mom decided to make Manteo their home, moving there in 2021. Her interest in pottery continued, so she enrolled in classes at the College of the Albemarle. However, the pottery clay irritated her hands, forcing her to stop. Soon after, a friend mentioned a new opportunity at COA. She and her mom arranged a visit and tour with the Access to Achievement coordinator, who introduced her to several exciting career development programs. Allyson was immediately drawn to the culinary course and signed up the same day! She realized she wanted to learn more than just how to make mac and cheese, with hopes of working in a restaurant someday.
