Background: Discovering Access to Achievement
Michael always had a passion for the outdoors, but it wasn’t until he began mowing his neighbors’ lawns that he discovered his true love: turfgrass. What started as a simple favor of mowing grass for neighbors and friends soon blossomed into a fascination, as he realized there was much more to this green world than just the hum of a lawnmower. Eager to expand his knowledge, he sought support through his ABE class and now with Access to Achievement (A2A) at Catawba Valley Community College to enroll in the Turfgrass program.
With A2A’s guidance, Michael not only secured his spot in the classes but also received crucial financial aid that made his education possible. His instructors, in collaboration with A2A, provided the encouragement and mentorship he needed, creating a nurturing environment where he could thrive. Michael immersed himself in his studies, learning about important topics such as lawn equipment, safety, lawn maintenance, and horticulture.
His hard work paid off, and he is proud to be earning a stellar 4.0 GPA. Every lecture and hands-on experience deepened his understanding of turf maintenance and landscape design, solidifying the foundation of his dream. With a clear vision for his future, Michael aspires to own his own landscaping business one day, but first, he plans to gain experience by working for a local lawn company.
Through A2A’s support, Michael has found not only academic success but also the confidence to chase his aspirations—transforming a simple favor into a promising career in turfgrass management.

Access to Achievement (A2A), is a vibrant blend of support, learning, and growth, tailored for each student’s unique journey. For Michael, a typical day begins with the excitement of stepping into Catawba Valley Community College, where he engages with his instructors and classmates in hands-on, inclusive turfgrass classes. he attends classes focused on lawn maintenance and horticulture, diving deeper into the complexities of turfgrass beyond just mowing. Throughout the day, A2A’s dedicated coordinator provides encouragement, resources, and collaboration with instructors, ensuring that Michael has everything he needs to succeed academically and personally.
Overcoming Challenges: The Support that Makes a Difference
The Access to Achievement concept of inclusion makes all the difference for Michael. He works side by side in an inclusive environment with projects that arise all over our campus. He feels capable, empowered and accepted by all his peers.
Achievements: Skills and Milestones
Turfgrass Projects with the Chamber of Commerce: Michael’s class collaborated with the Catawba County Chamber of Commerce to develop and implement a turfgrass management plan for two local properties, showcasing his understanding of horticulture and lawn care.
Campus Soccer Field Renovation: As part of a hands on project , Michael’s class played a vital role in renovating the campus soccer field, applying his knowledge of lawn maintenance, irrigation systems, and sports turf management.
4.0 GPA and Confidence Boost: Earning a stellar 4.0 GPA has given Michael invaluable confidence, not only in his academic abilities but also in his potential to succeed in the turfgrass industry.
